Mr. Avery Cain once again accompanied me to the voting booth and helped me cast my vote. He’s never been so excited to be a part of the process, and I was happy to wait for him to come home from school so he could join me at the polling station.

This book was fantastic. It’s been on my shelf since 2002 — seriously — and I’m not sure why I held on to to it for so long or why I decided to read it now, but now that I finally have, I’m blown away.
It’s simply nothing short of a journalistic masterpiece; a documentary that reads like a novel. From USA Today, “the author lets Coco, Jessica and assorted characters use their own voices to tell their stories. The reader is a witness. Nothing is glamorized or sanitized, not the rats, roaches, bad parenting or faulty reasoning.”
This book is brilliant, rare and committed reporting crafted into a page-turning story. I honestly feel like I’ve found a treasure — go read it now!
This is little Mikaela’s sister Carlie, momma Nicole and sister Madeline. Nicole and I have known each other longer than we haven’t at this point — about 16 years. She’s an awesome mom, a great daughter, a loving sister, an involved aunt and just an all around fabulous person. (September 1, set here.)
This is my, uh… pseudo niece? In any case, she’s definitely Avery’s cousin, Rodney’s sister Nicole’s oldest daughter, and named Mikaela, aka “little” Mikaela. That would make me “big” Mikaela, and boy did I feel big, as in really, really, really old this past weekend. She made Jase feel old too, but that’s besides the point — HE IS OLD. (August 31, set here.)
Today was AC’s had first football game of the year. The whole crew came out inclding me and Jase, Rodney LeAnne and Aren, Nicole and all her girls, “little” Mikaela, Carlie and Madeline. Madeline and Carlie got a hold of my camera for a while and I now have some pretty ridiculous photos to upload. I’m sure Avery will be happy to know that while he was out on the field getting his ass kicked, we were on the sidelines totally messing around and not paying attention to the game. Heh. (August 30, here and here.)
This is AC landing a jump the YMCA skatepark, where he’s gone to camp for the past four years, and where today marks the end of the 2008 camp season. Check out the tongue action. I think it’s a sort of trademark. (Or maybe like Dumbo’s feather: he can’t land tricks without the magical tongue hanging out of his mouth?) I just love watching this kid in action. On a skateboard, in the ocean, at football — I can’t get enough of his high impact intensity, he who was born simply to move. (August 29; set here.)

1. any even-toed, hoofed mammal of the suborder Ruminantia, being comprised of cloven-hoofed, cud-chewing quadrupeds, and including, besides domestic cattle, bison, buffalo, deer, antelopes, giraffes, camels, and chevrotains.
This sign is at the entrance of our local meat rendering plant. What… doesn’t everyone have a local meat rendering plant? No? Huh. Anyway, I like the end: “Oh yeah, and no goat or sheep stuff, either.” (August 28, set here.)
This photo is from my sky blue pink set a few weeks ago. It’s different enough, and I love it enough, that I couldn’t resist posting it for a daily photo anyway :) That’s the chimney that we had to unexpectadly rebuild shortly after moving in, to which we attached a Jakka. To the right is my bedroom window. (August 25, set here.)
