Little Mikaela

football ridiculousness

football ridiculousness

This is my, uh…  pseudo niece?  In any case, she’s definitely Avery’s cousin, Rodney’s sister Nicole’s oldest daughter, and named Mikaela, aka “little” Mikaela.  That would make me “big” Mikaela, and boy did I feel big, as in really, really, really old this past weekend.  She made Jase feel old too, but that’s besides the point — HE IS OLD.  (August 31, set here.)

One Local Summer: 08/25 week thirteen

I’ve been on a mission to use us all the preserved food I still have lingering in the freezer from last season.  I’m getting close, and since using up the peaches for this week’s meal, I’m now down to only diced butternut squash and pureed pumpkin.

One Local Summer, meal thirteen: peachy pancakes, cantaloupe

Pancakes made with whole wheat flour (McGeary Organics/Annville Flouring Mill - 94 miles) and peaches (my freezer - 0 miles/originally from DelVal College - 12 miles).  Nonlocal ingredients used: baking powder, soy milk, vanilla extract, salt, canola oil, maple syrup.  Fresh cut cantaloupe (Blooming Glen Farm CSA crop share - 5 miles) is on the side.

This week’s meal featured two simple local ingredients: whole wheat flour, peaches

One Local Summer: 08/25 week thirteen

This meal was a perfect brunch over the long weekend.  I used Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s recipe for “straight up” pancakes in Vegan with a Vengeance, omitting the cinnamon and maple syrup and, obviously, adding peaches.  Last year was the first time I preserved fruit; I don’t own a pressure canner, so freezing was my only option.  While they kept very well and are incredibly tasty, I’m not sure that the effort and freezer space will be worth it this season.  If I could can a dozen or so quarts, I’d consider it, so I’m stepping up my find-a-canner efforts before this peach season hits!

first football game of 2008!

Today was AC’s had first football game of the year.  The whole crew came out inclding me and Jase, Rodney LeAnne and Aren, Nicole and all her girls, “little” Mikaela, Carlie and Madeline.  Madeline and Carlie got a hold of my camera for a while and I now have some pretty ridiculous photos to upload.  I’m sure Avery will be happy to know that while he was out on the field getting his ass kicked, we were on the sidelines totally messing around and not paying attention to the game.  Heh.  (August 30, here and here.)

sk8 camp at the Y

This is AC landing a jump the YMCA skatepark, where he’s gone to camp for the past four years, and where today marks the end of the 2008 camp season.  Check out the tongue action.  I think it’s a sort of trademark.  (Or maybe like Dumbo’s feather:  he can’t land tricks without the magical tongue hanging out of his mouth?)  I just love watching this kid in action.  On a skateboard, in the ocean, at football — I can’t get enough of his high impact intensity, he who was born simply to move(August 29; set here.)

Ruminant

ruminant

ru·mi·nant /ˈrumənənt/  noun

1. any even-toed, hoofed mammal of the suborder Ruminantia, being comprised of cloven-hoofed, cud-chewing quadrupeds, and including, besides domestic cattle, bison, buffalo, deer, antelopes, giraffes, camels, and chevrotains.

This sign is at the entrance of our local meat rendering plant.  What… doesn’t everyone have a local meat rendering plant?  No?  Huh.  Anyway, I like the end:  “Oh yeah, and no goat or sheep stuff, either.”  (August 28, set here.)

blooming glen crop share report: 2008 08/26 week 14

(Click photo to read notes at flick’r regarding names/quantities of share.)

It’s recently been determined that I will never tire of fresh cherry tomatoes.  EVER.

Orange-y

sky blue pink

This photo is from my sky blue pink set a few weeks ago.  It’s different enough, and I love it enough, that I couldn’t resist posting it for a daily photo anyway :)  That’s the chimney that we had to unexpectadly rebuild shortly after moving in, to which we attached a Jakka.  To the right is my bedroom window.  (August 25, set here.)

One Local Summer: 08/18 week twelve

As soon as both squash and tomatoes came into season, I knew the time was perfect for a roasted vegetable sandwich I’d been dreaming up.  The idea for this meal started when I discovered Philadelphia’s local hummus, Bobbi’s.  I’m not sure how Bobbi’s eluded me, but I’m so glad I finally stumbled upon this local treasure during a recent visit to — of all places — Whole Foods.

One Local Summer: 08/18 week twelve

One Local Summer, meal twelve: pressed roasted vegetable and hummus sandwich, watermelon

Sliced zucchini, plum tomatoes, flat yellow string beans (not sure of their technical name) and green bell pepper were roasted with minced garlic, chopped basil (all from Blooming Glen Farm CSA crop share - 5 miles) olive oil, salt and pepper, then added to a sliced olive roll  (Baker’s on Broad - 0 miles) and grill-pressed.  Nonlocal ingredients used: olive oil, salt, pepper.  A smear of black bean hummus (Bobbi’s - 36 miles) and a lettuce leaf (Blooming Glen) were added before serving with a side of fresh cut watermelon (also Blooming Glen).

This week’s meal featured seven simple local ingredients: string beans, zucchini, tomatoes, pepper, lettuce, olive roll, hummus

One Local Summer: 08/18 week twelve

The sandwich turned out fabulous, and Jason, who shared the meal with me, totally agreed.  The hummus was very good, though had a lighter, fluffier texture than I’m used to, which could perhaps be acounted for by the lack of tahini in their recipe.  From what I’ve read since bringing home a tub of the black bean variety, Bobbi’s jalapeño should be next on my to-try list, followed by olive, roasted red pepper, and garlic.  Of course, even better would be finding a local farm that grows garbonzo beans so that I could craft my very own hummus!  For now though, I’m happy to find a locally produced, if not grown, alternative for my hummus supply.

Bye bye, Malibu.

Bye bye Malibu

When the repair on my car took longer than expected, my super amazing mechanic hooked me up with a free car rental.  I ended up in a brand new Chevrolet Malibu and seriously?  It was a great ride!  (August 24, here.)

Hot air

This little balloon floated by our front porch tonight.  I could evn hear the psshhht, psshhht! of the heater.  Er, maybe that was Jase. (August 23, here.)
